Angers vs. Nice: the visitors have found their stride, but the hosts need points too
On November 8, Angers will host Nice in the 10th round of Ligue 1. For the hosts, this is an opportunity to move a little further away from the danger zone, while the visitors will be looking to consolidate their position in the top half of the table. The teams come into this head-to-head clash in completely different moods: Angers are going through a difficult spell, while Nice are gradually building momentum and already beginning to resemble a side capable of challenging for the higher positions.
League position and team form
After nine rounds, Angers sit 15th with eight points. Stéphane Gilli’s team has yet to show any real consistency: two wins, two draws and five defeats. Particularly concerning is their goal difference of 9:16. There is some potential in attack, but the defense makes mistakes far too often, and those errors are costing the team points.
Nice look far more convincing. OGC Nice have collected 14 points and occupy eighth place. Four wins, two draws and three defeats represent a solid return at this stage of the season. The team has scored 13 goals and conceded 11. More important than the figures themselves, however, is the trend: after a difficult start to the campaign, the visitors have noticeably improved and are now capable of beating teams from the upper half of the table.
Recent results and psychological state
Angers head into the match after a 2-0 defeat to Lyon. Before that, the team drew 0-0 with Lorient, having earlier suffered a painful 5-2 home defeat to Marseille and a heavy 5-1 loss to Brest.

The only genuinely positive result during this stretch was a 2-0 win over Troyes. It is clear that Gilli’s team urgently need to turn things around, particularly in defense.
Nice are in a completely different frame of mind. In the most recent round, the team produced a true goal fest, thrashing Rennes 5-2. Before that came a 2-1 win over Brest, a 2-1 defeat to Lyon, and victories over Strasbourg (2-1) and Lille (2-1). Four wins in their last five league matches is a statistic that speaks for itself. The visitors currently look far more confident than their upcoming opponents.
Tactics and key players
Under Stéphane Gilli, Angers will most likely opt for a fairly cautious setup with five defenders. In such a system, the wing-backs play a crucial role, as they are required not only to support the defense but also to contribute to attacks. The hosts must prevent Nice from enjoying too much freedom on the ball in central areas.
Among the potentially important players, Prosper Peter stands out as the team’s leading league goalscorer, along with Haris Belkebla and Branko van den Boomen. The latter two will be expected to help the hosts compete for control of midfield and move the ball into the attacking third more quickly.
Angers also have several squad concerns. Amin El Ouazzani is dealing with a groin problem, while Oumar Pona is doubtful due to a calf injury. This limits the coaching staff’s options when selecting the lineup.
Under OGC Nice, Olivier Pantaloni favors a more combination-oriented style, with active use of the flanks and quick progression of the ball. The key figure in the current attack is Elye Wahi. The forward has already become one of the main stars of the season, scoring a hat-trick against Rennes in the previous round. Mohamed Amoura, Sofiane Diop and Jonathan Clauss also deserve attention. Clauss is particularly valuable for his runs down the right flank.
However, the visitors also have plenty of squad issues. Ali Abdi, Antoine Mendy and Laurent Abergel are still recovering from injuries, while Axel Witsel and Moïse Bombito remain doubtful. Nevertheless, Nice’s squad depth allows them to field a sufficiently competitive starting eleven.
Head-to-head record
Nice have a slight edge in the teams’ recent meetings. In March 2026, they beat Angers 2-0 away from home. However, in December 2025, Angers managed to win on the road (1-0). Earlier, in April 2025, Nice prevailed 2-1, while in September 2024 they thrashed their opponents 4-1 away from home.
Therefore, the visitors have a certain psychological advantage, but Angers’ recent victory shows that the hosts should not be written off.
In my view, Nice are deservedly considered the favorites for the upcoming clash. Pantaloni’s team have built strong momentum, are scoring regularly and are playing far more convincingly than they did at the start of the season. The visitors’ attacking line is particularly impressive, capable of creating danger even against well-organized defensive structures.
Angers will count on the support of the home crowd and look to play with maximum discipline. However, their defensive problems have not disappeared, and against an opponent of this caliber, even a few mistakes could prove fatal. If Nice seize the initiative early, the hosts will have a difficult time.
I would not expect an easy outing for the visitors, but taken together, the factors clearly favor them. Angers can respond with occasional dangerous attacks, yet securing all three points will be a difficult task.
Prediction: Nice to win.
