Universidad de Chile Faces Disciplinary Action Over Fireworks Incident at Estadio Nacional

Universidad de Chile’s emphatic 5-1 win over Huachipato has been overshadowed by off-field trouble. As reported by RedGol, referee Claudio Díaz filed a disciplinary report citing the extensive use of fireworks and flares by fans during and after the match, prompting formal proceedings by the league’s Disciplinary Tribunal.
The referee noted that fireworks were launched from the southern stands—occupied by U de Chile supporters—as early as the teams’ entrance for the Fair Play ceremony. The activity continued throughout the game and intensified at the final whistle, with flares and pyrotechnics also coming from the northern sector.
Club officials now face the task of responding to the Tribunal, which could impose financial penalties or matchday sanctions. Additionally, questions are being raised over the breach in security that allowed such items to enter the stadium.
This incident compounds ongoing logistical issues for the club, including uncertainty over the venues for upcoming home matches. While the team is performing well on the pitch, administrative missteps now threaten to derail their momentum in the 2025 Liga de Primera season.
