Two Second Division Clubs Submit Bids to Join Honduras' Top Flight

The Honduran National League is set to expand from 10 to 12 teams starting with the 2025-2026 Apertura Tournament, in a move aimed at increasing competitiveness and bringing professional football to new parts of the country. According to Deportes TVC, the league has already received the first formal applications from second-division clubs seeking to secure one of the two newly available spots.
In an interview with the outlet, league president Jorge Herrera confirmed that five clubs from the Liga de Ascenso have expressed serious interest, but only two have submitted official applications with complete documentation. “Atlético Júnior de Yoro and Academia AFFI from Choluteca submitted their applications stating that they meet all the requirements and are eager to participate,” Herrera explained.
While those two clubs are leading the process, the selection remains open. The league's governing body is waiting to receive all applications before moving forward with the evaluation phase. “We’ve had calls from three other clubs who said they will submit their paperwork soon, so we have five clubs in total who say they are eligible,” Herrera added.
Interested teams have until April 30 to submit their applications to the league authorities. Once the deadline passes, officials will begin reviewing the proposals and select the two clubs that will be promoted to the top tier.
