German police have arrested two men accused of blackmailing the family of seven-time Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher, Reuters reported citing Bild.
The two men from the German city of Wuppertal were arrested on Wednesday for extorting large sums of money from the legendary driver's family.
Reportedly, the extortion involved millions of euros. Prosecutors in Wuppertal launched an investigation into the blackmail targeting the celebrity's circle, leading to these arrests.
This isn't the first instance of Schumacher's family being blackmailed. In 2017, a 25-year-old man was convicted for attempting extortion related to Schumacher's wife, Corinna Schumacher, and was sentenced to one year and nine months on probation. He was also fined €4,500, ordered to perform 50 hours of community service, and undergo therapy.
Since suffering a severe head injury in a skiing accident during a family vacation in the French Alps in December 2013, Michael Schumacher has not appeared in public.
His family maintains strict confidentiality regarding his condition, with access to information limited to only his closest associates.
