Clubs around the world often face restrictions on signing new players, usually due to outstanding debts. However, South Korean side Gwangju has been hit with a transfer ban for an unusually absurd reason.

Details: The story dates back to the winter of 2023, when the club signed Albanian winger Jasir Asani. At that time, the club was obligated to pay a solidarity contribution, which they did. Yet FIFA rejected the payment, arguing that it was not paid in full.

The club was unaware that the payment had not been accepted, while FIFA considered the solidarity contribution unpaid. As a result, in December 2024, FIFA not only imposed a transfer ban on the club, but also slapped them with a penalty and a monetary fine.

Unaware of FIFA’s sanction, the club continued signing players—who, naturally, could not be registered. Now, Gwangju officials state that they will pay the outstanding sum and are hopeful for a positive resolution.

Recall: Previously, French club Lyon also faced a transfer ban, but in their case, it stemmed from financial troubles within the club.
