Ronaldo made history after the match against Slovenia. But there is a nuance

On the night against 2 July, the Portuguese national team defeated Slovenia in a penalty shoot-out in the round of 16 of Euro 2024. The leader of the Seleçao, Cristiano Ronaldo, realised his kick from the mark, but during the match he did not score a penalty, which made history.

The Portuguese became the first footballer from Europe, who failed to realise three penalties at international tournaments in the 21st century. The first time he failed to beat the goalkeeper off the mark was in the Euro 2016 match against Austria (0-0), while the last time Ronaldo failed to convert a penalty at international tournaments was at the 2018 World Cup against Iran (1-1).

The 39-year-old Portuguese failed to convert a penalty for the first time since 4 February 2022. It happened back for Manchester United in the match of the fourth round of the FA Cup against Middlesbrough.

Notably, the game then also featured a series of penalty shoot-out, and as in the game against Slovenia, Ronaldo scored then.
