The Spanish national team is rated as one of the top teams in the world of football, but the same cannot be said when it comes to the Furia Roja's matches against the hosts of international tournaments.

The Spaniards have faced such teams nine times, and surprisingly have not lost only once - at the 1980 European Championship, where they drew 0-0 with Italy.

In seven other cases "Furia Roja" lost in regular time, and the last match with the host of the tournament, which fell on the 2018 World Cup in regular time ended in a draw, but in a penalty shootout the Spaniards lost.

Spain's national team matches against hosts of big tournaments:

  • 1934 World Cup – 0:1 against Italy
  • 1950 World Cup – 1:6 against Brazil
  • Euro 1980– 0:0 against Italy
  • Euro 1984– 0:2 against France
  • Euro 1988– 0:2 against Germany
  • Euro 1996 – 0:1 against England
  • 2002 World Cup – 0:1 against South Korea
  • Euro 2004 – 0:1 against Portugal
  • 2018 World Cup - 1:1 (3:4 penalties) against russia

This statistic is a worrying bellwether in the context of the Euro 2024 quarter-final match, where Spain will meet tournament host Germany.
