Pope Leo XIV Not a Fan of Any Peruvian Club, But Has a Soft Spot for AS Roma

Following his historic election, Pope Leo XIV has stirred curiosity in Peru, a country where he lived for more than 20 years. While early rumors linked him to Alianza Lima, Father Fidel Purisaca, the communications director of the Diocese of Chiclayo and close aide during his bishopric, clarified that the pope does not support any Peruvian football club.
Speaking to Sol TV, Purisaca dismissed the speculation: “He was not a fan of any club, especially not Alianza or Universitario. That’s false. He never had a particular attachment to any team in Peru.” However, he did note a quiet fondness for Italy’s AS Roma, observing that the pontiff “showed joy and occasionally mentioned Roma,” without identifying as a die-hard fan.
A passionate tennis enthusiast, Leo XIV played regularly in Chiclayo and recently welcomed ATP No. 1 Jannik Sinner to the Vatican, where the Italian gifted him a racquet and a ball. “We’ll break something if I try! Better not,” the pope joked.
Though his football allegiance may be neutral, Leo XIV’s connection to Peru is undeniable. He voted in its 2016 elections and often cheered for the national team. Yet when it comes to club loyalty, the Holy Father remains above rivalries.
