On the road to Europe. NBA confirms plans to launch new league involving football clubs

The NBA is seriously considering an entry into the European market, planning the creation of a new basketball league in collaboration with FIBA. According to commissioner Adam Silver, the project is still in its early stages, with a launch expected no earlier than the 2026/27 season.
The main goal of the new league is to establish a sustainable and attractive platform for European basketball, complementing existing national championships and the EuroLeague. The NBA is contemplating a league with 16 teams and has already held preliminary talks with several football heavyweights—such as PSG and Manchester City—to help form basketball franchises.
The financial aspect is equally impressive: each team is expected to require around $500 million in investment. However, Silver emphasizes that the league does not intend to compete with the EuroLeague, but rather to complement it by building a mutually beneficial partnership. Entry into the new league is set to be based on sporting merit—performance and results on the court.
