Steve McClaren has resigned as head coach of the Jamaica national team following a goalless draw with Curaçao.
Details: The draw against Curaçao ended Jamaica's hopes of direct World Cup qualification, leaving them with only a playoff route in March next year. This was the main reason behind McClaren's decision to step down.
Jamaica needed a win, but the team hit the woodwork three times in the second half and just couldn't find the net. Curaçao, meanwhile, became the smallest nation by population ever to reach the final tournament. Jamaica finished second in Group B of the CONCACAF qualifiers, despite being considered favorites.
Nevertheless, the Reggae Boyz still have a chance to reach the 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the USA through the playoffs. Potential opponents include Iraq, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Bolivia, Suriname, and New Caledonia.
"Leading this team has been one of the greatest honors of my career, but football is a results business, and today we fell short of our goal, which was direct qualification from the group. A leader's responsibility is to take ownership and make decisions in the best interests of the team. After deep reflection, I have decided to step down as head coach of Jamaica. Sometimes the best thing a leader can do is recognize when the team needs a fresh voice, new energy, and a different perspective to move forward," said the 64-year-old former England manager.
Reminder: Curaçao has qualified for the World Cup for the first time in its history.
