Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, is undergoing significant renovations as Uganda prepares to co-host the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) with Kenya and Tanzania.
The main part of these upgrades is adding a new type of grass system that mixes real grass with artificial fibers. This special surface is made of 95% real grass and 5% artificial material, making it stronger and more reliable, so it works well in any weather. Recently, machines were used to sew the artificial fibers into the real grass to create this tough playing field.
Other changes include adding seats that are easy to use for people with disabilities, making the stadium more welcoming for everyone, and setting up safe exit points to help people leave quickly in case of emergencies. These changes are meant to meet global standards, turning Namboole into a top place to show off Africa's football skills.
With these updates, Uganda is not only preparing for CHAN 2024 but also showing it can be a great host for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Uganda is working with Kenya and Tanzania as part of the "East Africa Pamoja" project to make this happen.
