Mano Menezes Returns to Grêmio Nearly Two Decades After Iconic First Spell

Grêmio have officially announced the return of head coach Mano Menezes, who signed a contract through the end of 2025, according to the club. The 62-year-old manager returns to Porto Alegre nearly 18 years after his legendary first tenure, which included the iconic "Battle of the Aflitos" in 2005 when Grêmio secured promotion with just seven players on the pitch.
That unforgettable moment kicked off a successful run for Menezes, as he led the club to the Série B title, back-to-back state championships in 2006 and 2007, and a Copa Libertadores final. His first spell with Grêmio included 161 matches, with 84 wins, 35 draws, and 42 losses. He returns alongside assistants Sidnei Lobo and Thiago Kosloski, and fitness coach Flavio de Oliveira.
Nationally, Menezes boasts three Copa do Brasil trophies with Corinthians (2009) and Cruzeiro (2017, 2018), as well as state titles in São Paulo and Minas Gerais. He also coached the Brazilian national team between 2010 and 2012, winning two Superclásicos against Argentina and a silver medal at the London 2012 Olympics.
His résumé includes stints in China and the Middle East, adding to his vast international experience. Menezes will lead Tuesday’s training session and be presented to the media afterward.
