Substituted in the 66th minute, the Senegalese midfielder has cast doubt on the reasons for his substitution.

Faced with criticism, Pape Thiaw explained the substitutions he made following Senegal’s dramatic defeat to Belgium in the round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup. The Senegal manager had stated that the substitutions had been made at the request of certain players who were physically exhausted.

However, Pape Gueye gave a conflicting account. Substituted in the 66th minute, the Senegalese midfielder insisted he was not suffering from any physical problems. Nevertheless, he respects the decision taken by his manager.

“I was physically fine; ultimately, it’s the manager who makes the decisions… It’s a matter of respect. ”

It should be noted that Pape Gueye has announced that he is taking a break from international football. In a post on his Instagram account, the Senegalese midfielder explained that his decision was due to his disagreement with the management of Pape Thiaw and his staff following Senegal’s elimination from the 2026 World Cup.
