“The team lacked character,” lamented Krepin Diatta following Senegal’s elimination from the 2026 World Cup
Senegal were beaten 3–2 by Belgium
The Lions of Teranga suffered a spectacular comeback defeat at the hands of Belgium’s Red Devils in the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup.
Senegal are out of the World Cup currently being held in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Senegalese side were defeated by Belgium on 1 July after leading for 85 minutes.
It is a defeat that Krepin Diatta regrets. In his view, the Senegalese had every opportunity to avoid this elimination.
“We shouldn’t have lost that match at that moment. The team lacked character. In the final minutes, we had to give it our all; even if it meant getting stuck in to win the challenges, we had to do it. There are things we need to review. We fell short. There are no excuses. The people deserve better.”
