Reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns earned a narrow 1-0 victory over Stellenbosch FC in a crucial Betway Premiership clash in Cape Town on Wednesday. In-form striker Iqraam Rayners, who joined Sundowns from Stellenbosch ahead of the season, scored the only goal of the match in the first half to give his side all three points.
In the eighteenth minute, Rayners scored his eleventh goal of the season. Rayners raced through after a deft cross from Kobamelo Kodisang, who then ducked around Sage Stephens, the goalkeeper for Stellenbosch, and finished comfortably. Rayners had scored in each of Sundowns' previous five games, and this goal continued their stellar run.
Stephens kept his team in the match despite Stellenbosch's difficulties by making a spectacular save to stop Rayners' strong attempt in the fourteenth minute. But a few seconds later, Rayners scored thanks to a superbly executed pass from Kodisang, leaving him helpless.
Stellenbosch had a late chance in the first half when Thabo Molisane's header from a free kick was saved by Sundowns' goalkeeper Denis Onyango. The 39-year-old was again called into action in the second half, producing key saves to deny Andre de Jong and Devon Titus.
Stellenbosch managed to remain in the game thanks to Sundowns' wasted chances, but Onyango's quick thinking made sure the visitors won. With the victory, Sundowns now leads the standings by three points, while the Orlando Pirates are now in second position.
