Major Changes at Al Ahly as Three Players Depart Before Messi Showdown

Egyptian giants Al Ahly SC have officially announced the departure of Ramy Rabia, Akram Tawfik, and Hamza Alaa, following the expiry of their contracts—just two weeks before the start of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Cairo-based club thanked the trio for their contributions:
“Al Ahly extends sincere thanks to Ramy Rabia, Akram Tawfik and Hamza Alaa following the end of their contracts with the first team.”
The decision marks a significant shift for Al Ahly, who recently celebrated their record-extending 45th Egyptian Premier League title and third consecutive domestic crown.
Changing of the Guard
The departures come minutes after the club unveiled Spanish manager José Riveiro as their new head coach on a two-year deal. Riveiro, formerly of Orlando Pirates, now faces a challenging task: rebuilding a squad that has just lost three experienced players ahead of a crucial international campaign.
What’s Next for Al Ahly?
Riveiro needs to move quickly to fill the void left by Rabia, Tawfik, and Alaa—all of whom were instrumental in Al Ahly's recent victories—as continental supremacy and Club World Cup ambitions are top priorities.
The team kicks off its Club World Cup journey on June 15 against Inter Miami, led by Lionel Messi, in what promises to be a blockbuster clash.
This new chapter signals both transition and ambition for Africa’s most decorated club.
