Following discussions held earlier this year, changes to the points system in Formula 1 are planned for 2025. Specifically, the bonus point for the fastest lap will be eliminated after a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council.

Details: The additional point for the fastest lap, which was reintroduced in 2019 for drivers finishing in the top 10, will no longer be awarded starting from 2025.

Previously, a revision of the points system was considered, where points could be awarded to drivers finishing from 1st to 12th, instead of just the top 10, as is currently the case. However, after further discussions, it was decided to maintain the existing 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1 system that has been in place since 2010.

Reminder: In addition, the FIA has revised and simplified the sporting, technical, and financial regulations ahead of updates set to come into effect in 2026. The restructuring is necessary to improve the clarity and organization of the rules, which are now divided into thematic sections: sporting rules in Section B, technical rules in Section C, and financial rules regulating team expenses in Section D.

Additional changes are expected to be presented for approval by the World Council in the coming months. The next WMSC meeting will take place on December 11, immediately after the Formula 1 season finale in Abu Dhabi.
