After last season, Bordeaux, owned by Gerard Lopez, was declared bankrupt and relegated to the fourth division. However, the French club is not the only victim of the Luxembourg businessman’s financial troubles.
Details: According to L'Equipe, Boavista, a Portuguese Primeira club also owned by Lopez, is now facing serious financial difficulties.
If Boavista does not cover its outstanding debts in the near future, the club may be forced into liquidation.
In 2001, Boavista claimed its first and only Portuguese championship title. The club has also won the Portuguese Cup five times and the Super Cup three times.
After 11 rounds this season, Boavista sits in 14th place with just nine points.
Boavista previously faced bankruptcy in 2008, which resulted in their demotion to the fourth division before eventually climbing back to the Primeira.
Reminder: Former England striker Andy Carroll is currently playing for Bordeaux in France’s fourth division.
