Unexpected! Manchester City star officially joins Benfica

Claudio Echeverri is starting a new chapter of his career in Portugal.

Details: Benfica have officially announced the signing of 20-year-old Argentine attacking midfielder Claudio Echeverri from Manchester City. The player has joined the Lisbon club on loan through the end of the 2026/27 season, while the agreement also includes an option for Benfica to make the transfer permanent.

Manchester City have also confirmed the move, stating that Echeverri will spend the remainder of the campaign with the Portuguese side. No financial figure for the purchase option was disclosed in the official announcements.

Echeverri was presented by Benfica on September 2 and will wear the No. 30 shirt. Speaking after completing the move, the Argentine made it clear that his ambition is to help the team achieve its objectives and compete for trophies during the season.

It is worth noting that Echeverri originally signed for Manchester City from River Plate in January 2024. He later made his first-team debut for the English club and scored his first City goal from a free kick against Al Ain at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
