Here we go! Manchester City star heads to Benfica
Benfica have pulled off an intriguing deadline-day move for one of Manchester City's most talented youngsters.
Details: According to renowned insider Fabrizio Romano, Claudio Echeverri is set to join Benfica after the Portuguese club reached a verbal agreement with Manchester City. Romano gave the transfer his trademark “here we go”, signalling that the main terms of the deal have been settled.
The agreement is initially structured as a loan. Benfica will cover 100% of the Argentine midfielder's salary during his spell in Lisbon, while the deal also includes an option to buy.
Echeverri is expected to travel to Portugal today to complete the remaining formalities. The move offers the youngster another opportunity to secure regular playing time after spending the previous campaign away from Manchester City.
Benfica had already shown interest in Echeverri before his move to England. Portuguese outlet A Bola reports that the Lisbon club tried to sign him in 2023, before Manchester City eventually acquired him from River Plate.
It is worth noting that Echeverri is still only 20 years old. According to A Bola, he made 28 appearances during his loan spells with Bayer Leverkusen and Girona last season, recording one goal and two assists. His Manchester City contract runs until June 2028.
