FIFA Sanctions Nigeria and DR Congo After 2026 World Cup Qualifier Incidents
FIFA has sanctioned both the Nigeria Football Federation and the Congolese Association Football Federation following disciplinary incidents that occurred during a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification match between the two nations.
According to FIFA’s latest disciplinary report released for the World Cup qualifying series, both football bodies were found guilty of separate infractions during the fixture played on November 16, 2025.
FIFA stated that Nigeria was punished for failing to maintain proper order and security during the match. The violation involved supporters throwing objects from the stands, an offence that falls under Article 17 and Article 17.2.b of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. As a result, the Nigerian federation was fined 1,000 Swiss Francs.
Meanwhile, the Congolese federation received a heavier penalty after their supporters were found to have used laser pointers or similar electronic devices during the match. The act breached Article 17.2.d of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, prompting FIFA to impose a fine of 5,000 Swiss Francs on the federation.
