The first round of the English League Cup sees Plymouth Argyle face Exeter City on Monday at Home Park in Plymouth. For both sides, this will be their first official fixture of the 2026/27 season, with the hosts entering the derby on the back of a strong preseason, while the visitors are starting their new campaign as a League Two club.

Plymouth Argyle: strong finish and impressive preseason

Last season, Plymouth narrowly missed out on the League One playoffs by just two points, despite a confident finish to their campaign. The team went unbeaten in their final six matches and suffered only one defeat in their closing 12 league games.

Over the summer, Tom Cleverley’s side continued to build momentum, winning five out of six friendlies, with their only setback being a goalless draw against Bristol City. Plymouth also strengthened their squad with seven new signings, including forward Will Evans.

Exeter City: starting over after relegation

Exeter finished last season 21st in League One and dropped to the fourth tier. After Gary Caldwell’s departure, the team lost its stability, and under Matt Taylor, managed just one win from 13 league matches, keeping only two clean sheets during that run.

Their preseason preparations have also been inconsistent. Exeter won just one of their four friendlies, suffering defeats to both Truro City and Torquay United along the way.

Match facts and head-to-head

  • Plymouth won five out of six preseason matches and remained unbeaten.
  • Exeter managed just one victory in four friendly games.
  • Last season, Exeter beat Plymouth 2-0 at home, while the clash at Home Park ended in a 2-2 draw.

The hosts look far more confident: prediction for Plymouth Argyle vs Exeter City

Plymouth come into the derby in better form and have maintained positive momentum since the end of last season. Home advantage should also prove significant. Exeter, meanwhile, are still rebuilding after relegation and have not impressed in preseason. Based on current form, the hosts are clear favourites.
