Eto’o's "Fon of Fons" Title Sparks Controversy in Cameroon

Samuel Eto'o, the former captain of Cameroon’s national football team and now the head of the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot), has been given the title "Fon of Fons" or "Ntumfyon" by traditional leaders in the North-West region of the country.
This esteemed award is intended to acknowledge Eto'o's contributions to the development of Cameroonian football. Nonetheless, the choice has generated a great deal of discussion, with many individuals questioning whether it is appropriate to bestow such a title on a member of the athletics community.
Some traditional leaders, like HRM Fon Yakum Kevin Teuvih of Babalang, have spoken out against it. They say that only Cameroon’s President, Paul Biya, should receive this kind of honor. Critics feel that the title, which is usually given to people deeply connected to local communities, has been influenced by politics.
Widespread dissatisfaction is also evident in social media responses, as many people accuse Eto'o of abusing the position to gain political power before a potential campaign. Given the ongoing turmoil in the North-West, some residents believe the accolade diminishes the region's traditional values. Eto'o's reputation for attracting controversy is further enhanced by this most recent event.
