In their opening Group Stage match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Cape Verde took on Spain, and one of the African side’s players rewrote the tournament’s history books.
Details: According to Opta, Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha became the oldest player ever to make his FIFA World Cup debut and keep a clean sheet, achieving the feat at the age of 40. He also produced seven saves and was named Player of the Match.
Meanwhile, Cape Verde also made history by becoming the first African nation in 24 years to avoid defeat in its first-ever FIFA World Cup match.
As a reminder: Spain’s forward also rewrote the tournament’s history by matching an unwanted record that had stood since 1966.
