Cameroonian Star Aboubakar Gives Back, Launches Football Academy to Serve His Nation

Vincent Aboubakar, the captain of Cameroon's national team, has formally opened the Vincent Aboubakar Academy in Yaoundé. The program's goal is to find, develop, and coach the nation's young football players, especially those in the U14 and U17 age groups.

Aboubakar is still playing professionally with Hatayspor in Turkey, where he has 40 goals and 104 caps for the Indomitable Lions. However, he is already engaging in youth development at the age of 33 in order to prepare for life beyond football.

Aboubakar, who is originally from Garoua, decided to open his academy in Yaoundé, probably in an effort to reach more young players. Trials have already been held at the academy, drawing thousands of prospective football players wanting to be selected. Before formally joining, the chosen players will now go through technical and physical evaluations.

Despite launching the academy, Aboubakar remains active on the field, having scored 7 goals in 21 matches for Hatayspor this season. He was recently linked with a move to Turkey’s second division, but the transfer window closed before any deal materialized.

The academy is part of Cameroon's thriving football development landscape, which also includes organizations like Fundesport (established by Samuel Eto'o), Kadji Sport Academy, and CotonSport Academy. What makes Aboubakar's project unique among these well-established programs is still up in the air.

In the upcoming weeks, the Vincent Aboubakar Academy is anticipated to be formally inaugurated. Long-term goals, coaching staff, and facility specifics will be disclosed. Given Cameroon's reputation for turning out elite football players, this program may be crucial in forming the next wave of talent.
