As América and Cruz Azul gear up for the first of three high-stakes matchups in just 11 days, Brian Rodríguez has made it clear that his team will do the talking on the pitch. Responding to Lorenzo Faravelli’s recent claim that the Ciudad de los Deportes Stadium would see more Cruz Azul supporters than América fans, the Uruguayan striker remained unfazed. “We don’t get into that kind of talk. We speak on the field,” Rodríguez told Mediotiempo.
Despite América’s dominance in recent matchups against their capital rivals, Rodríguez insisted his side doesn’t view itself as the favorite. “That’s not who we are. We respect every opponent. Sure, we beat Chivas recently and people might see us as favorites, but we approach every game with humility,” he said.
Rodríguez also weighed in on head coach André Jardine’s rumored links to the Brazilian national team. “He’s respected back home for what he’s done, especially at the Olympics, but I hope he stays with us,” he said.
América and Cruz Azul will meet on Tuesday in the first leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinals before facing off twice more in Liga MX. Tensions are rising, and the Clásico Joven has never felt more alive.
