Club América released a statement Monday denying any official communication regarding a potential playoff match for a spot in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, set to take place from June 14 to July 13 in the United States. The clarification came amid reports suggesting América could face LAFC in a one-off match to qualify, as reported by EFE.
“To date, the club has not been notified about any qualifying match for the Club World Cup,” América said in its press release. “If there is any relevant information, we will be the first to inform the public.”
América is currently focused on domestic and regional competitions. The club is chasing an unprecedented fourth consecutive Liga MX title and is set to play Cruz Azul on Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the Concacaf Champions Cup.
The speculation follows FIFA’s decision to exclude Club León from the Club World Cup due to a conflict of interest — León shares ownership with Pachuca, another qualified team. Should the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) uphold FIFA’s decision, a playoff between América and LAFC, two of the region’s top teams, could become a likely scenario.
