El Salvador’s head coach Hernán Darío Gómez is pushing for friendly matches outside the FIFA calendar in order to accelerate preparations for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers. As reported by El Gráfico, the Colombian manager believes these games are essential for properly evaluating players in real competitive settings.
“I’d prefer friendlies over microcycles, even if they’re not during FIFA dates,” Gómez said. He emphasized that only through live matches can a coach truly assess a player’s capabilities, referencing recent performances that gave him clearer insights.
Despite logistical challenges, Gómez confirmed that conversations have taken place with federation officials and that planning is underway. “It’s difficult since they’re outside the official windows, but I’d really like to do it. That’s when you really get to see the player, like I did yesterday,” he noted, highlighting defender Mauricio Cerritos as an example.
Gómez praised the character shown by several young players during the recent match against Canada, particularly Cerritos and both full-backs. “They showed great personality and composure,” he said.
With time running short and recent Gold Cup results falling below expectations, Gómez is looking to maximize every available opportunity. These off-calendar friendlies, he believes, could be the key to strengthening the team’s identity and solidifying his roster ahead of the qualifiers.
