Barcelona Eyes Kevin Lomónaco as Defensive Reinforcement, Alarming Independiente

Barcelona is reportedly targeting Kevin Lomónaco, the standout center-back from Argentine side Independiente, as part of its defensive reshuffling. The news, revealed by Spanish program El Chiringuito, has raised concerns at the Avellaneda club, where the player has become a key figure under coach Julio Vaccari.
With doubts surrounding Ronald Araújo’s future at the club and Andreas Christensen’s ongoing injury struggles, Barcelona is exploring options to bolster its backline. Lomónaco fits the profile: strong, fast, dominant in the air, and confident with the ball at his feet—traits that align well with Barça's defensive demands.
The 22-year-old was recently called up to Argentina’s national team for World Cup qualifiers, though he has yet to debut. His performances at Independiente—45 appearances, 2 goals, and 1 assist—have made him a rising star, and his $20 million release clause could make a deal feasible.
Independiente, however, is standing firm. “Unless an attractive offer comes from Europe, he’s staying,” said club secretary Daniel Seoane. The club recently extended Lomónaco’s contract through December 2028 and significantly raised his salary, placing him among the team’s top earners.
Asked after a recent match about possible interest from Mexico, Lomónaco responded dismissively: “From Mexico? Who said that? I don’t know anything. People say so much… I’m focused here.” For now, all eyes are on Europe—and on Barcelona.
