Players will now have to be much more careful with what they say and how they gesture on the pitch.
Details: Starting today, during the opening match of the FIFA World Cup between Mexico and South Africa, the so-called “Vinícius rule” will take effect. This regulation prohibits players from covering their mouths with their hands while speaking to referees or opponents during the match.
The new rule was introduced in response to controversial incidents, such as the one involving Prestianni and Vinícius, when the Brazilian accused the Argentine of making racist remarks during the Champions League clash between Benfica and Real Madrid.
At that time, FIFA was unable to determine exactly what Prestianni said, as he had covered his mouth with his hands.
Now, if any player is caught covering their mouth with their hand during a conversation in a World Cup match, they will be shown a straight red card.
