A penalty mistake? Mourinho delivers surprising response to Mbappé controversy
José Mourinho has responded to the refereeing scandal surrounding Kylian Mbappé's controversial penalty against Racing Santander.
Details: Spain's Technical Committee of Referees officially acknowledged that the penalty awarded to Mbappé during Real Madrid's 3-0 victory over Racing Santander was a clear refereeing error. The committee concluded that Matteo Prati had not committed a foul and that VAR should have intervened. Asked about this decision, Mourinho made it clear that he did not believe the incident had influenced the outcome.
“What I think is that penalty didn't directly affect our point tally in the table. Without that penalty, we still would've won the match by 3 or 4 goals,” Mourinho explained.
The Portuguese coach nevertheless admitted that he understood why the decision had caused controversy:
“I can confess to you that to me it is a little penalty, because if they give it to the opposing team, then I would've been upset... That's why it's a little penalty.”
However, Mourinho ended his response with an emphatic statement:
“But it has NO impact whatsoever.”
It is worth noting that Mbappé converted the controversial penalty to open the scoring in the 11th round of La Liga on November 1. Real Madrid eventually secured a 3-0 victory, with Jude Bellingham and Yan Diomandé also finding the net.
