The refereeing controversy surrounding Real Madrid's victory over Racing Santander has taken a dramatic new turn.

Details: Spain's Technical Committee of Referees (CTA) has officially acknowledged that the penalty awarded to Kylian Mbappé during Real Madrid's 3-0 victory over Racing Santander on November 1 should never have been given. The committee described the decision as a clear and obvious refereeing error and insisted that VAR should have intervened.

The controversial incident occurred in the 10th minute of the La Liga encounter at El Sardinero. Mbappé controlled the ball inside the penalty area and attempted to accelerate past Racing midfielder Matteo Prati, who placed his arm in front of the French forward. Referee José Luis Munuera Montero immediately pointed to the penalty spot.

However, after reviewing the footage in the latest edition of Tiempo de Revisión, the CTA concluded that Prati had not applied sufficient force to justify the decision. The committee found no causal connection between the defender's movement and Mbappé's fall, declaring that there was no penalty and that the video assistant referee should have corrected the on-field decision.

The penalty nevertheless stood during the match, and Mbappé converted from the spot to give Real Madrid the lead. The visitors eventually secured a 3-0 victory, but the official assessment has now confirmed that the opening goal resulted from an incorrectly awarded penalty. Notably, that strike was Mbappé's 12th La Liga goal of the season.
