23-year-old Bayern Munich goalkeeper Mala Grohs opens up about her battle with cancer

Bayern Munich women's team goalkeeper Mala Grohs has shared details of her fight against cancer during an appearance on BR Blickpunkt Sport. The 23-year-old spoke about undergoing surgery and provided insights into her recovery process.
Grohs admitted that at first, she was unaware she had cancer, as initial medical examinations failed to pinpoint the cause of her health issues. Due to the rare nature of her condition, cancer was not initially considered a possibility, even when affected tissues were discovered. It wasn’t until October 2024 that she finally received a confirmed diagnosis.
Doctors diagnosed Grohs with tonsil cancer, and following the confirmation, she underwent surgery to remove the tumor just before Christmas. The operation left a visible scar on her neck, which remains to this day.
However, she later received the best possible news—her doctor informed her that the cancer had been completely eradicated, and she wouldn’t need any further therapy.
Grohs made a remarkably quick return to training, rejoining her teammates in mid-January. Last Wednesday, she marked her official comeback to Bayern's starting lineup, playing in the Women’s German Cup quarterfinal against Eintracht Frankfurt.
