Bayern Munich’s female goalkeeper Mala Grohs has revealed that she has been diagnosed with cancer, reports The Sun. The 23-year-old shared the heartbreaking news with her fans in an emotional video message.
"I was diagnosed with a malignant tumour. I'm in the very best hands with the doctors here. The girls and everyone at the club are really supporting me in any way that they can. The whole thing is definitely a challenge that I never thought I would have to overcome. But with the help of everyone here I'll certainly beat it," she said.
Bayern’s women’s team management has expressed full support for Grohs, extending her contract until 2026. Her teammates and players from other women’s teams have also sent messages of encouragement. Supportive words have also poured in from fans.
Maria Luisa Grohs signed with Bayern in 2019. Initially a backup goalkeeper, she broke into the starting lineup in 2022 and has since made 81 appearances for the club. She is a three-time German champion and a winner of the German Super Cup.
In previous interviews, Grohs mentioned that if she hadn’t become a footballer, she would have tried to become an astronaut.
