Lorient – Monaco: Ligue 1 leaders travel to Brittany in search of a win
On October 18, Lorient will host Monaco in a Ligue 1 matchday 7 clash. The encounter at Stade du Moustoir will kick off at 17:15 local time. The visitors travel to Brittany as league leaders, but they certainly cannot afford to relax: the hosts are gradually finding their rhythm and have already shown they can take points off more established opponents.
Lorient: a chance to get a result at home
After six rounds, Lorient sit eighth with eight points. Their start has been uneven, but the team is gradually getting back on track. In the previous round, the Brittany side beat Paris 1:0, having picked up points in several difficult games before that. Now, in front of their home fans, they will look to build on that positive momentum.

One major positive for the hosts is their organisation without the ball. Lorient have conceded just six goals in their opening six matches and have already kept three clean sheets. For a team outside France’s traditional elite, that is a respectable record.
Against Monaco, it will be especially important not to leave gaps between the lines and to prevent the visitors from launching quick attacks.
In attack, attention should be paid to Isak Jensen, Jean-Victor Makengo and Kouassi. Panos Katseris, who previously made an active contribution going forward, could also add threat from the flank if he is fit enough to play. The hosts do not need to dominate possession at all times; it will be far more important to use the available space intelligently and make the most of their limited opportunities in front of goal.
There are also some squad concerns. Noah Mbamba and Bandiougou Fadiga are dealing with hamstring problems, while Mohamed Bamba remains a doubt due to physical discomfort. For the coaching staff, that means fewer options when selecting the lineup, particularly if the match calls for attacking reinforcements in the second half.
Monaco: leaders must prove their credentials
The Monegasques head into the game top of the table. After six rounds, they have 14 points from four wins and two draws. The team are still unbeaten in the league, but they dropped points at home in the previous round, drawing 2:2 with Toulouse. That result will likely have left a bitter taste: Monaco remain in first place, but the chasing pack is close behind.
The main attacking figure at present is Paris Brunner, who has scored four league goals. The young striker makes excellent use of open spaces and can punish the slightest defensive mistake. Edan Diop and Mathys Abline can also help create chances, while Aleksandr Golovin remains a key source of creativity. His passes between the lines could unlock even a compact Lorient defence.
At the same time, Monaco’s schedule is packed. After drawing with Toulouse, the team played a Conference League fixture against CSKA Sofia and won 2:1. That result provides confidence, but it also adds to the players’ workload. Filipe Luis will have to decide how heavily to rotate his squad and who can maintain their intensity after the European away trip.
The squad situation is far from ideal as well. Among the players who are doubts or are recovering from injuries are Denis Zakaria, Jordan Teze, Mamadou Coulibaly, Anis Souibert and Ansu Fati. Takumi Minamino’s return from a serious knee injury is a positive development, but it would be premature to expect him to be ready for a full 90 minutes.
What can we expect from the match?
Monaco will surely look to seize the initiative and exploit their edge in individual quality. But Lorient are playing at home, are well organised defensively and are unlikely to recklessly open up. If the hosts withstand the early pressure, they will have a chance to take advantage of the visitors’ fatigue and punish mistakes during transitions from attack to defence.
The opening goal could prove decisive. If the Monegasques score first, the game may open up as Lorient are forced to push forward. If the hosts take the lead, however, it will be difficult for the visitors to break down a compact defence.
That is especially true given that Lorient won both meetings with Monaco in the 2025/26 season — 3:1 at home and 3:1 away. That is a strong argument that the league leaders are unlikely to enjoy a comfortable outing.
Monaco look like the favourites on the strength of their squad and their early-season results, but the demanding schedule and the hosts’ organisation could make their task considerably tougher.
I expect a hard-fought match and would not rule out a draw.
My prediction: both teams to score - yes
