On June 16, Skonto Stadions (Riga) will host the match of the 3rd round of the Euro 2024 Qualification, in which Latvia will compete with Turkey. The battle will start at 20:45 CET.
Latvia
The team is the only one among the representatives of the Baltic countries that managed to break through to the top level and played at the Euro (and even took a draw there). Still, that happened almost two decades ago, in 2004. Then, “the Red and Whites” have never been close to repeating the higher mentioned success. On the contrary, there were qualifying rounds with no wins at all, for instance, there were 9 defeats in 10 rounds. And only the previous year gave an opportunity for the Latvians to remind of themselves by winning a group in the Nations League (albeit at the level of the League D). Moreover, the team lost the final of the Baltic Cup to Iceland in the autumn only in a penalty shoot-out (7-8). Speaking about the March matches, Kazakevičs’ wards lost both battles: first, there was a 2-3 defeat made by Ireland in the qualification and then the team lost a friendly confrontation to Wales with a 0-1 score.
Turkey
The national team triumphantly made its way directly to the previous Euro. Still, it showed the worst result of all 24 participants at the very tournament. Moreover, the state of things in the qualification began to fall apart, so, there was no surprise that Kuntz became the new mentor. Stefan was able to lift “the Janissaries” to the 2nd place (and lost the away match of the play-off to Portugal with a 1-3 score), which was followed by the triumph in the group of the Nations League. The new qualifying cycle began with a strong-willed victory in Armenia (Kabak’s early own goal did not bother the team). Still, speaking about the confrontation against a stronger opponent, the Croats, nothing could be opposed even at the home arena – a 0-2 failure. However, two teams will overcome the group stage that is why it is important to take the points with the outsiders. It is not surprising that almost all the best players, with a minimum of debutants, have been collected again.
The statistics of head-to-head matches
The Turks were able to win only from the sixth attempt, which happened in the last but one year – there had been a defeat and a lot of draws before. Moreover, a 2-1 success was achieved by Yilmaz’s goal scored from the penalty in the 9th added minute.
Predictions
Bookmakers consider the guests to be the favourite of the following battle. Still, taking into account the history of confrontations, it is reasonable to have a closer look at the bet on the Latvians with “a +1.5 goal handicap” (odd: 1.84).
