Latvia finished bottom of their group in the previous edition of the Nations League. At the same time, in the spring, the team defeated Gibraltar twice by a narrow 1-0 scoreline. In the summer, however, Latvia lost to Lithuania on penalties in the Baltic Cup before suffering a defeat to the Faroe Islands in regular time.
Cyprus managed just one win in the previous edition of the Nations League — against Lithuania. In last year's qualifiers, the team picked up six of their eight points in matches against San Marino. Meanwhile, Cyprus defeated Moldova and Liechtenstein in friendly matches, but lost to Belarus and drew with Slovenia.
In the opening round of the current Nations League campaign, Latvia suffered a 0-2 defeat to Armenia. Cyprus put up a fight against Montenegro but ultimately lost 1-2.
