Can Internacional punish a depleted Santos? Prediction for Internacional vs Santos - 06.09.2026
On Sunday, September 6, Internacional will host Santos at Beira-Rio in the 26th round of the Brazilian Serie A. Kick-off is scheduled for 16:00 local time. This is a hugely important match at the bottom end of the table: Internacional sit 18th with 25 points from 25 games, while Santos are 14th with 29 points from 24 matches.

Internacional: the pressure to win is becoming enormous
Internacional enter this round inside the relegation zone after a very difficult spell in the Brasileirão. Paulo Pezzolano's team have failed to win any of their last five league matches, drawing four in a row before losing 3-2 away to Bahia.
The numbers explain why the situation has become so uncomfortable. Inter have only five victories in 25 league games, with ten draws and ten defeats, scoring 26 goals and conceding 31. They are only four points behind Santos, however, meaning a home victory would immediately tighten the battle in the lower half of the table.
There have at least been signs that Internacional remain competitive. Before the defeat against Bahia, they held Atlético Mineiro, Remo, Palmeiras and Flamengo to draws. The bigger problem has been turning reasonably balanced performances into victories.
The Beira-Rio factor should therefore be particularly important. Internacional cannot afford another cautious performance against a direct rival, and there is clear pressure on the team to take three points from this fixture.
Santos: improved league form, but the absences could change everything
Santos arrive in Porto Alegre in better league form. Cuca's side have taken seven points from their last three Brasileirão matches, beating Vasco da Gama 3-0 and Corinthians 1-0 either side of a 1-1 draw against Mirassol.
That run has allowed the Peixe to move four points clear of Internacional, but their position remains dangerous. Santos have seven wins, eight draws and nine defeats in 24 matches, with 34 goals scored and 36 conceded.
The biggest concern ahead of Sunday is personnel. Neymar suffered a problem in his right thigh and Cuca has already indicated that he is unlikely to be available. His absence would remove the team's most influential creative player just days after he played a decisive role in the league victory over Corinthians.
Santos will also be without Lucas Veríssimo and Álvaro Barreal through suspension. Veríssimo is a key figure in central defence, while Barreal gives Cuca another important option between midfield and attack. Losing all three at the same time significantly reduces the visitors' quality in both phases of the game.
Arthur is already registered and could make his debut, potentially providing greater control in midfield. Rodinei, however, is not expected to be available yet.
Internacional also have important absences
The hosts are not approaching the match at full strength either. Alexandro Bernabei is suspended after collecting his third yellow card, which is a significant blow considering his attacking contribution this season.
Paulo Pezzolano will also be suspended from the technical area. On the positive side, Gabriel Mercado, Bruno Gomes and Paulinho are available again after serving their suspensions in the previous league round.
That should give Internacional more options, especially in defence and midfield, for a match in which controlling transitions will be vital. Santos remain dangerous on the counter even without Neymar, but their reduced creativity could make it more difficult to exploit the spaces Inter occasionally leave behind.

Santos' absences give the hosts their opportunity: Internacional vs Santos prediction
Ordinarily, it would be difficult to trust Internacional at this price. They have struggled badly to convert draws into victories and are deservedly inside the relegation zone after only five wins in 25 rounds.
But this particular match-up offers them an unusually good opportunity to respond. Santos arrive without two suspended starters and are also likely to lose Neymar, the player around whom much of their attacking creativity is built. Veríssimo's absence can be especially important against an Internacional side that should play far more aggressively at home.
Santos' recent league form deserves respect, and Cuca's team have shown they can be disciplined away from home. Still, replacing Neymar, Barreal and Veríssimo simultaneously is a major task, especially in a direct relegation battle at Beira-Rio.
Internacional have their own problems, most notably Bernabei's suspension and Pezzolano's absence from the bench, but the return of several players increases their options. With home advantage and an urgent need for three points, I expect the Colorado to take more risks and eventually make Santos' personnel problems count.
Prediction: Internacional to win.
