On Monday, September 28, 2026, Indonesia and Malaysia will meet at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta in the second round of Group A at the FIFA ASEAN Cup. Both teams made perfect starts: Malaysia defeated Bangladesh 3-0, while Indonesia beat Singapore 2-0. The Malaysians currently sit top on goal difference, but with only the group winner advancing to the final and the runner-up heading to the third-place match, this rivalry clash could have a major impact on the battle for first place.

Indonesia: Herdman's team already looks more convincing
John Herdman’s side started the tournament with a controlled 2-0 victory over Singapore. Indonesia took the lead in the 13th minute when debutant Luke Vickery created the opening for Ragnar Oratmangoen, and Ole Romeny added the second from the penalty spot after the break.
The clean sheet was particularly encouraging given Indonesia’s defensive personnel problems before the tournament. Captain Jay Idzes was not included because of injury, while Dony Tri Pamungkas was withdrawn from the squad as he continued his recovery. Yakob Sayuri also had to pull out through illness. Shayne Pattynama and Rizky Eka Pratama were called up as replacements.
Nevertheless, Herdman still has considerable depth. Maarten Paes started in goal against Singapore, with Kevin Diks, Elkan Baggott, Justin Hubner, Calvin Verdonk and Dean James all involved from the opening whistle. Thom Haye and Ivar Jenner were options from the bench, meaning Indonesia still have room to strengthen the midfield if Herdman wants more control against Malaysia.
The hosts are ranked above their opponents and, more importantly, have the advantage of playing another match at Gelora Bung Karno. Against Singapore, Indonesia did not need to play at maximum tempo throughout the 90 minutes. Against Malaysia, however, their ability to move the ball quickly through midfield and attack the spaces behind the full-backs will be much more important.
Malaysia: Arif Aiman and Bergson make an immediate impact
Malaysia could hardly have asked for a better opening match. Tan Cheng Hoe’s side beat Bangladesh 3-0 without conceding, with Arif Aiman scoring twice in the first half before debutant Bergson da Silva added a third shortly after the interval.
The attacking unit looked well balanced. Arif Aiman provided directness and individual quality from the flank, Bergson offered a physical focal point in the penalty area, while Faisal Halim and Stuart Wilkin helped connect midfield with attack. Nooa Laine and Manuel Hidalgo also gave Malaysia stability in possession.
Tan Cheng Hoe, currently working as interim head coach, had to change his squad before the tournament. Faris Danish Asrul was ruled out with a serious calf problem, Sergio Aguero had not fully recovered from his previous injury, and Romel Morales was unavailable because of a hamstring issue. Harith Haiqal Adam Afkar, Muhamad Syahir Bashah and Paulo Josue took their places.
Malaysia showed against Bangladesh that those absences have not destroyed their attacking structure. However, Indonesia represent a very different test. The hosts have more pace in defensive transitions, significantly greater individual quality in several positions and enough depth to change the rhythm of the match from the bench.

Tan Cheng Hoe’s team have enough attacking quality to punish mistakes and should make this a much more demanding contest than Indonesia’s opener.
Still, the balance of the matchup points toward the hosts. Indonesia have a deeper squad, more players accustomed to a higher club level and several midfield options that can help Herdman take control if the match becomes congested. Playing at Gelora Bung Karno should also allow them to increase the pressure as the game progresses.
The straight home victory is not particularly attractive for this matchup, so the handicap offers a more interesting route. Indonesia are capable of creating enough chances to win by more than one goal, while a one-goal victory would return the stake on the Asian line.
