Australia vs Turkey: facts, betting tip and head-to-head ahead of the opening match of the 2026 World Cup
Early on June 14, Australia and Turkey will face off in their opening Group Stage match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Kick-off is scheduled for 6:00 CET, and here is my betting pick for the encounter.
Australia vs Turkey: Match preview
Australia did not make the best start to their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. However, after Tony Popovic took over as head coach, the Socceroos comfortably secured second place in their Asian qualifying group, finishing six points clear of Saudi Arabia. They booked their place at the finals after progressing through three qualifying rounds. Their form in friendlies has been inconsistent as well. After winning both matches in March, they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Mexico before the World Cup and then played out a 1-1 draw against Switzerland.
Turkey have produced impressive results since reaching the quarter-finals of UEFA Euro 2024, and their qualifying campaign largely met expectations. They finished second in their group behind Spain before coming through the play-offs by defeating Romania 1-0 and Kosovo 1-0 to secure their place at the 2026 World Cup. In their final warm-up matches before the tournament, Turkey beat North Macedonia 4-0 and followed it up with a 2-1 victory over Venezuela.
