A major scandal broke out ahead of the 2026 World Cup Round of 16 clash between France and Paraguay. Legendary former Paraguayan national team goalkeeper José Luis Chilavert published a racist statement targeting the French squad.
The incident was sparked by comments from former French striker Christophe Dugarry, who, during a broadcast on RMC, assessed the teams' chances before the upcoming fixture. The expert expressed confidence in a victory for "Les Bleus," claiming that Paraguay would only defend and commit fouls, as they lacked the ability to create dangerous attacking opportunities.
In response, Chilavert posted a message on social network X, writing:
Christophe, you're right. At the 1998 World Cup we played against the French, but now Paraguay will face an African team.
The former goalkeeper's statement triggered a wave of backlash on social media. Many users condemned his words as a racist insult directed at the French team, a significant portion of which is made up of players of African descent.
