World football legend visits South Africa. Star World Cup winner becomes honorary guest at Soweto Derby
Legendary Thierry Henry attended the famous Soweto Derby in South Africa. The Betway brand ambassador took to the pitch before the match alongside the captains of Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.
The match is being played at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg. Henry will not only watch the clash from the stands, but also meet with fans and present a prize to the winner of a special Betway fan promotion.
Interestingly, Henry's visit also coincides with a special anniversary: the Premier Soccer League of South Africa is celebrating 30 years of professional football. The appearance of the 1998 World Cup winner will bring even more international attention to one of the most eagerly anticipated matches of the season.
It is worth remembering that the Soweto Derby is much more than an ordinary league match. The clash between the country's two most famous clubs was first contested in January 1970 and has evolved over the decades into one of Africa's most recognizable football events. For the fans, it is a battle for prestige, club identity and the right to call themselves Johannesburg's strongest club.
