He beat them — then defended them! Orlando Pirates coach makes bold statement after Soweto derby
Abdeslam Ouaddou has delivered an unexpected message of support to his biggest rivals.
Details: Following Orlando Pirates' 2-1 victory over Kaizer Chiefs in Saturday's Soweto derby at FNB Stadium, head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou surprised reporters by backing his opponents to remain in the Betway Premiership title race. Despite securing three crucial points, the Moroccan tactician praised Fernando Da Cruz and his coaching staff for their work at Kaizer Chiefs.
Speaking after the match, Ouaddou insisted that the Chiefs' technical team deserves time to implement its football philosophy. He highlighted the quality of the squad, particularly its young players, and expressed confidence in the direction the club is taking.
“In my opinion, they're on the right path. We don't have to rule them out of the title race,” Ouaddou said.
The derby itself was a fiercely contested battle. Yanela Mbuthuma opened the scoring for Orlando Pirates before Pule Mmodi equalised for Kaizer Chiefs. However, Tshepang Moremi struck in the 55th minute to secure victory for Ouaddou's side.
It's worth noting that Orlando Pirates have now recorded seven consecutive league victories. They sit second with 25 points from nine matches, just one behind Mamelodi Sundowns, who have played an additional game. Kaizer Chiefs remain fifth with 14 points.
