Verstappen says incident with Russell at Spanish Grand Prix should never have happened

The latest Formula 1 race brought a wave of disappointment for Max Verstappen’s fans, as the Dutchman collided with George Russell with just five laps to go, received a ten-second penalty, and finished the race in tenth position. But the Red Bull team leader insists the incident was avoidable.
Details: On his Instagram, Verstappen explained that the safety car played a decisive role, and it was after the restart that his maneuvers led to the collision with Russell—something he feels should never have happened.
Quote: “We had an exciting strategy and a strong race in Barcelona, right up until the safety car came out. Our tire choice to the finish and a few moves after the restart fueled my frustration.
This led to a misjudged move that should never have happened. I always give everything for the team, and emotions can run high. We win together and lose together. See you in Montreal.”
Reminder: With five laps to go, Red Bull strategists instructed Verstappen to yield position to Russell to avoid a possible penalty. Soon after, the stewards ruled it was unnecessary, but the Dutchman ignored the call, and in turn five, he collided with Russell as the Briton was braking.
In addition to the 10-second penalty, Verstappen also picked up his 11th penalty point in the past 12 months. If the Red Bull leader receives one more penalty point in the next two Grands Prix, he will be suspended for one race.
