Unfortunate Scene at National Sports Stadium: Fan Dies in Stampede After Zimbabwe vs DR Congo 2027 AFCON Qualifier Clash

An unfortunate incident occurred around the National Sports Stadium on Monday evening, with a football fan reportedly losing their life in a stampede following Zimbabwe’s 2-1 defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in a 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

According to local reports, the Zimbabwe Republic Police has confirmed the death and opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

In a statement released after the match, police said the incident occurred at Gate 2 at approximately 6:30pm, around the time the Zimbabwe-DR Congo match was getting underway.

The police described the incident as a “fatal incident involving a police public order vehicle and a pedestrian”, confirming that one person died during the ensuing stampede.

Authorities have now begun investigations to establish exactly what happened and the circumstances that led to the loss of life.
