The world's second-ranked tennis player, Carlos Alcaraz, was unable to complete his 1/16 final match at the ATP 500 tournament in Rio de Janeiro against Brazilian Thiago Monteiro (No. 117 ATP).

After just the second game of the match, with the score at 1:1, Alcaraz felt pain in his ankle and opted not to continue the game.

It is currently unknown when the young Spanish tennis prodigy will be able to return to the court. However, after the match, Alcaraz expressed hope that he managed to avoid a serious injury.

"I fell, and the sensation was very unpleasant. I immediately felt pain and knew that playing would be tough. I told the team that I would try to continue, but if I dragged it out in such a situation, things could worsen. After an examination, the physiotherapists said that the injury is not very serious. The ankle needs a bit of time to recover. We'll see what a more in-depth examination reveals, and then we'll decide on the course of action. I hope to be ready to compete in Las Vegas. I will work on it", – said Alcaraz.

Recall that at the tournament in Buenos Aires, Alcaraz failed to defend his title, losing in the semifinals to Chilean player Nicolas Jarry.

Last year, Alcaraz reached the final of the Rio de Janeiro tournament but was defeated by Cameron Norrie.
