Thabo Senong: African Youth Football is on the Right Path

Newly appointed FIFA Talent Coach Thabo Senong believes African youth football is evolving positively. The former South Africa U-20 coach, who led his team to two CAF U-20 AFCON and FIFA U-20 World Cup tournaments, is now tasked with developing young talent in Malawi under FIFA’s Talent Development Scheme (TDS).
Exciting New Role in Malawi
Senong said, "I'm humbled and excited," in appreciation of his new challenge. FIFA and the Malawian Football Association have responded quite well. Scouting, talent development, and young coach education are the main priorities of my job.
Experience with South African Youth Football
Senong has played a key role in South Africa’s youth setup, working with Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Diambars Academy before becoming SAFA’s U-20 head coach.
“Our goal was to build a strong foundation for Bafana Bafana. We won COSAFA titles, qualified for CAF and FIFA youth tournaments, and developed talents like Lyle Foster and Oswin Appollis,” he said.
The Growth of Youth Football in Africa
Senong attributes Africa’s youth football progress to stronger national leagues, better coaching education, and increased use of sports science and analytics.
Closing the Gap with Europe
To compete with Europe, he believes Africa must focus on:
Coach development and youth academies, like those of Ajax and Red Bull Salzburg.
Data analysis and sports science to improve player development.
A CAF Youth Champions League to enhance competition.
Top African Football Nations
For Senong, Morocco, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, Nigeria, and South Africa lead the way due to their strong leagues, exports to Europe, and CAF success.
His vision for 2025? A more structured and competitive youth system across Africa.
