Technology failed. The reason behind the lengthy VAR review in Barcelona's goal incident revealed
Another reminder that modern technology is far from perfect.
Details: In the 59th minute of yesterday's semi-final clash between Atlético Madrid and Barcelona, an unusual incident for Spanish football unfolded.
At that point, Barcelona were trailing 4-0, but a precise strike from Cubarsí allowed them to pull one back—only for the goal to be disallowed after a VAR review that dragged on for 7 minutes.
Today, the Spanish referees' technical committee announced that the prolonged VAR check was due to the system's inability to generate the offside line because of the high density of players, forcing the referees to do everything manually:
"During the analysis, it was discovered that the system failed to model the players with skeletons when detecting a situation with a high density of players.
After attempting to recalibrate the system and confirming it was impossible, the VAR team, following established procedures, resorted to drawing the offside lines manually to make the final and correct decision." the statement read.
Despite this explanation, Barcelona fans remain convinced the goal should have stood.
The return leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final is set for March 3 at Camp Nou.
Reminder: Catastrophic half for the Catalans. Barcelona concede four goals in a half for the first time in 83 years
