Maximilian Gerbl, a player for German club Hannover-Burgdorf, has decided to end his handball career at the age of 29—not due to injury, but to pursue a new professional path. According to Bild, the Swiss athlete is transitioning into financial consulting.

Gerbl will begin working in the financial sector in his homeland, joining Swiss service provider BDO AG. His preparation for this career shift began years ago. From 2019 to 2021, he completed a master’s degree in banking and financial services at the University of Basel while continuing his handball career.

"I am extremely grateful to have played in the world’s strongest league with Hannover, and I had a fantastic time. Now, a new chapter in my life begins. I’m excited about this opportunity and wish my teammates and the club all the best!" Gerbl stated.

Hannover-Burgdorf’s management did not stand in his way and agreed to terminate his contract amicably.

Gerbl was also a key player for the Swiss national handball team, earning 66 caps in international competitions.
