Storm clouds gather as Kaizer Chiefs hierarchy prepares radical decision on da Cruz
Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando da Cruz could lose his job before Christmas. According to The South African, the coach’s future is becoming increasingly uncertain amid the team’s disappointing results.
Kaizer Chiefs were knocked out of the CAF Confederation Cup qualifiers after losing to Zambia’s Red Arrows on penalties. Despite winning the second leg, the South African club failed to overturn the aggregate deficit and suffered a painful defeat.
The team’s problems have also followed them into the domestic league. After eight rounds of the Betway Premiership, Kaizer Chiefs trail leaders Mamelodi Sundowns by nine points and Orlando Pirates by eight. In addition, the team have recorded just one victory in their last seven matches across all competitions, while five of their previous six league games ended in draws.
The coach’s next major test will be the derby against Orlando Pirates, scheduled for October 31. Another setback could pile even more pressure on the manager and bring his departure from the club closer.
